Thirty-six years spent carrying meaning across five languages, from a child’s first arithmetic lesson to a clinical informed consent, a chargesheet, and the voice of a machine learning to hear Hindi.

In practice 36years Unbroken practice since June 1990.
Lines of record 78 Single projects and running client accounts, across eight subject fields.
Daily output 4,000words Sustained, in my own pairs. The figure a deadline is actually built on.
Working directions 6 Two of them reversible, which is what regulated back-translation requires.
What I do

Six things, and the two I decline

All of it delivered personally in my own four pairs, from Depew, New York, which means a domestic invoice, a W-9, and overlapping business hours with American buyers.

01

Translation

The core of it, in Urdu, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati, in both directions where the pair allows.

  • Medical and pharmaceutical
  • Legal and litigation
  • Medical devices
  • Pharmaceutical equipment
  • Codes of conduct
  • Corporate compliance
  • Corporate training
  • Educational material
  • Marketing
  • Technical documentation
From $0.14 medical and legal, $0.12 general. Full grid.
02

Linguistic validation

The whole chain rather than the translation half of it, run as one managed process with one accountable person.

  • Double forward translation
  • Reconciliation
  • Back translation
  • Harmonisation
  • Clinician review
  • Cognitive debriefing
  • Finalisation and report
Quoted per project, not per word.
03

Certified translation

A signed certificate of accuracy on my letterhead, carrying my ATA membership number, accepted where a sworn or notarised translation is asked for.

  • USCIS filings
  • Courts
  • Universities
  • Vital records
Quoted per document, on sight of a scan.
04

Localization

Websites and applications, where a string has to fit the control it sits in as well as mean the right thing. Devanagari and Nastaliq both run longer than English, and Nastaliq runs the other way.

  • Websites
  • Mobile applications
  • Interface strings
  • Help and support content
Priced as translation, with a review pass in context.
05

Media and voice

Educational and conference video, extensively into Hindi. Also the work that makes a script speakable: Urdu is normally written without its short vowel marks, so a speech engine has to guess. I put the marks back.

  • Educational video
  • Conference talks
  • Diacritics for AI voice
  • Diacritics for voice artists
  • Transcription
Transcript translation only. I do not time or engineer subtitles.
06

Quality and linguistic assets

The work that comes before and after a translation, and the reason a programme reads the same in year five as in year one. Post editing is priced as a flat figure, not as a discount off translation.

  • Revision and LQA
  • Cultural review
  • Linguistic sign-off
  • Glossary creation
  • Style guides
  • Post editing
Revision $0.05. Post editing $0.10 flat.

Two things I decline. Subtitle timing and engineering, and desktop publishing. Both are separate crafts, and I would rather name the boundary than subcontract it badly and put my name on the result.

Languages beyond my own four. Available through vetted partner linguists on request, with no list published, because I would rather tell you honestly where my own reach ends than take a fifteen language study and hope.

Where the work is

Medical most often, legal in most volume

Eight subject fields, ranked by how many times I have been commissioned in each. Volume is the smaller figure on the right, and it is the less useful one: what matters to a buyer is whether I have done their kind of document before, and how many times.

Medical 153,700,000 words
Legal 1313,400,000 words
Education 1110,750,000 words
Marketing 111,650,000 words
Forex 82,800,000 words
Mobile app 81,000,000 words
Technical 8832,000 words
Miscellaneous 4600,000 words

One square = one line of record Seventy-eight in total. Ranked by how often, not by how much: medical is the field entered most. Word volume counts each target language separately, as the trade invoices it, so 34,732,000 delivered words came from roughly a third as many source words. Exact figures for every line are in the full record.

Directions

Which way the work runs

Ribbon thickness is the number of commissions. English is the source for most of the record and the target for every reverse check.

Languages

Five languages, three writing systems

Register matters as much as vocabulary: colloquial speech, business and legal usage, and scientific terminology are three different jobs. Each of the four has its own page.

Eight commissions worth describing

Drawn from the full record below. Client names appear as they were contracted.

सुननाHindi to listen

Teaching a machine to hear Hindi

Amazon Alexa speech recognition

Speech-recognition training data has a requirement most document work does not: it has to match how people actually talk. Written Hindi and spoken Hindi diverge sharply in word order, register and borrowed vocabulary, and a corpus built from formal prose teaches the model the wrong language.

Delivered alongside Google product translation covering interface strings, legal terms and marketing copy in both Hindi and Urdu, and product content for Facebook.

2,50,000+words, Alexa EN → HI
गणितHindi mathematics

A whole curriculum, twice

Modern Teaching Aids · Edurite / Pearson

Grades one through six mathematics, science, history, geography, language, writing and reading rendered into Urdu and again into Hindi. Five million words in a single programme, held to one terminology across every subject so a child meets the same word for fraction in year two and year five.

When schools closed in 2020, a second body of pre-K to high-school material followed for children and parents learning at home. Audio and video teaching material for grades five to ten was translated separately for Edurite, a Pearson subsidiary.

9,000,000words, curriculum EN → UREN → HI
رضامندیUrdu consent

Informed consent, in both directions

Boehringer Ingelheim · Novartis · WHO

Clinical consent documents are translated forward and then translated back into English by the same hand, so a sponsor can see what the patient will actually read. This work ran in six directions for each sponsor: into Urdu, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati, and out of them again.

Also courses for the WHO Better Birth programme, and documentation for medical equipment. Where a sponsor needs the full instrument workflow rather than a translation, the chain runs to eight steps: how linguistic validation works here.

3,700,000words, medical EN → UR · HIUR · HI · MR · GU → EN
પ્રમાણપત્રGujarati certificate

Evidence, admissible

Litigation & civil registry

Chargesheets and their supporting documents, moved between English and Urdu, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati two million words per direction, six directions. Court work forgives nothing: a hedged verb or a softened accusation changes what a document proves.

Alongside it, the quieter and equally exacting work of certificates birth, death, diplomas, marksheets where a single misread number can stall an immigration file or a degree recognition.

13,400,000words, legal EN → UR · HIUR · HI · MR · GU → EN
ضابطۂ اخلاقUrdu code of conduct

What the company promises its own staff

Shell · Procter & Gamble · HP · GSK · Johnson & Johnson

Codes of conduct, compliance manuals and internal policy training. These documents are read by people deciding whether to report something, so the translation has to be unambiguous about obligation the difference between should and must is the whole document.

10,50,000+words EN → UREN → HI
स्थानीयकरणHindi localization

Strings that have to fit

Samsung · Candy Crush · Angry Birds · Tango · MobileIron

On-screen display for Samsung cameras, and interface data for four apps. Devanagari sets longer than Latin and Nasta’līq needs vertical room, so UI translation is as much a fitting problem as a linguistic one the right word that overruns its button is the wrong word.

Adjacent consumer work: transcreated advertising for Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Duracell, survey instruments for Nielsen, website material for TD Bank, and announcement copy for Emirates, Etisalat and DU.

ڈراماUrdu drama

Urdu plays, for people learning Urdu

University of Maryland

Transcription and translation of Urdu drama, prepared as learning material for Western students of the language. The task is double: get the spoken text down accurately, then render it so a learner can see how the original works rather than only what it says.

1,000,000words UR → EN
व्यापारHindi trading

Retail trading, explained twice over

Exness · FxPRO · Castrol · Jeep · Shell

Website content and user manuals for two foreign-exchange platforms, in Urdu and Hindi. Financial instruments carry regulatory language that must stay precise while the surrounding copy stays readable to a first-time trader.

Technical documentation followed the same rule: survey manuals for Shell, the Castrol website manual, a Jeep ATV user manual, and smoke-alarm installation instructions.

American Translators Association Directory listing

ProZ.com Client feedback

Willingness to Work Again entries from past clients. The full profile sits alongside it.

The work itself Four bilingual samples

Short excerpts from real commissions with a note on each decision, plus the specimen certificate issued with certified work.

On ATA certification Membership, not certification

The ATA runs no certification exam in Hindi, Urdu, Marathi or Gujarati, so nobody working in these languages holds that credential. Active membership is the ceiling, and it is what I hold.

Practice

Tools, standing, training

Translation memory and terminology discipline are what keep a five-million-word programme consistent from first file to last.
